It's the tall, silent type, except it's not overly tall at about 12 inches or so in height. Quiet, good looking, powerful, takes up minimal space, and just an extremely well-designed and engineered product. It also can "oscilate" or swings back and forth slowly if you want it to. Nice going Lasko. So quiet, on the "low" speed it's hard to hear that it is even on. My only small complaint is that the indicator lights that show it is on are kind of bright if it's in your bedroom and all the lights are out, but I just put a small piece of tape on the switch light to tone down the brightness. During the day, or for office use, or for less sensitive people (which is most people) this is a non-issue. I predict it will be the most popular fan in the world once the word catches on. We purchased it for our baby's bedroom to provide just a little moving air and its not really big enough for this, but would work well enough sitting beside you on a desk. Additionally, the real flaw here is that it's on / off lights, as well as oscillation light, are this piercing blue, and I mean really bright, so that it really lights up your bedroom. I don't have any issues with sleeping with noise from fans or lights coming through anything like power strips, computers, etc, but this is ridiculous. Not sure if I'm explaining it well enough, but buy this for use during the daytime, not the nighttime, unless you are looking for a crazy blue nightlight as well. Also, this has less of a regular fan noise as it has no fan blades.
